Joshua needs to fight tall and start using the jab. Not doing it often enough. Joshua's nose is bleeding to begin the round and continued to do so after the fact.
Povetkin is fighting intelligently. He's going in, connecting and then coming back out and landing the right hand. Joshua landed a stiff jab near the end of the round to give him some much-needed momentum.
More of a feeling-out round with Joshua utilizing the jab and missing the heavier shots until the final moments when Povetkin connected on a three-punch combination ending with a left hook, which wobbled Joshua.

I think Povetkin might try to be more aggressive in round 8, take a chance, but Joshua is such a great counter puncher, that I think Joshua can time the jab, and that could set up the right uppercut, I think as soon as he lands that shot, Povetkin will be really hurt, and Joshua can just hunt him down, land whenever Povetkin is vulnerable, be patient, but when Povetkin is in big trouble, tired, and it is all going against him, I don't think Joshua will need to be that patient, and Povetkin won't hold up against much of a beating, Joshua might land just a few distinguished follow up hayemakers, and with the last one, he'll put Povetkin away, if Povetkin goes down but gets up, I think he can't recover quickly, and Joshua can just stay smart, patient to the necessary extent, and resume his attack, and I definitely think he'll finish Povetkin.
Fantastic write up, don't know what more could be added to break the fight down further. There are people not giving this fight hype because they want Joshua vs Wilder now, but this is a good and intriguing fight that Povetkin has a real chance of winning though the heavy favorite has to be AJ.
Of course if you can't tell by the name I might be a tad bias lol. Mon, Seriously though, Matchroom is awesome, Hearn isn't the most popular, but he can't be questioned as less than brilliant promoter.
Hearn delivers, the only fight he has hyped up that we haven't seen and probably won't see, os Brook vs Khan, and Khan doesn't want the fight.
Wed, Sat, Joshua did a nice job finishing off this fight, but I think it shows a blueprint for how Usyk might be able to take a decision over him.
It took Joshua a while to time a very old Povetkin, who did a good job of moving his head and using his quickness to catch Joshua by surprise with leaping hooks.
Usyk is obviously a much more skilled boxer than Povetkin, has significantly better reflexes, is faster, is much youger, has a longer reach, and has far, far better stamina than old Povetkin.
The question is if he can sit down on his punches enough to get Joshua's respect, but if he can, I really do think he presents a legitimate challenge.
I'd much rather see it then some BS like Joshua-Whyte anyway. But all things considered, Povetkin does represent a potentially serious threat to the Briton.
It may well prove a serious challenge for the young champion, but if Joshua can prevail, particularly in impressive fashion, then the way may be cleared for the big battle we all really want to see.
But that said, the way was already clear, was it not? Mandatory defenses are routinely side-stepped and Wilder was clearly ready, willing and able to face Joshua months ago.
So what does a win over Povetkin at this juncture prove? Why take a risk against a lesser-known and less attractive contender when a superfight with Deontay Wilder looms on the horizon?
The fact of the matter is that one of the biggest fights in boxing has been hanging in the balance for more than a year now, with nothing more than talk and rumors pointing to it ever actually happening.
The danger here is that both Joshua and Wilder have shown degrees of vulnerability in recent fights, not to mention technical shortcomings.
He stays calm. Stays patient. He has trust in his punch power and talent. Even if the desire is there to face Wilder, would he be content to come to London to face AJ?
Undoubtedly he would ask for more of the purse, which could create problems in negotiations. Whyte has improved significantly and there is a grudge there, which would drum up interest, but it would be tricky to convince most a different outcome to their first fight is possible.
Joshua is not even close. Very, very clear to see, avoid me at all costs. This one is over, but head over to BetHard for all your boxing odds!

Povetkin is a tough challenger, he proved it, good counter punches, I came in here to have fun, work on what i worked in the gym.
I knew he was weak to the body, switching it up. It could have taken seven, eight or nine rounds, but the goal was to get him out of there.
It was the left hook that changed the fight, before a right sent the Russian sprawling into the corner.
After getting back up to his feet, several shots missed barely, before a straight right down the pipe forced the referee to intervene.
A lot of body work from Joshua in this fight, perhaps the most of any fight in his career. Will that be significant late on? By David Anderson Football and boxing correspondent.
